Home from work, itching eyes refreshed by a recent rain shower, you stand over the kitchen sink and twist the tap. If you look at water, because it is so freely available and abundant you might think that it is a very simple thing. Pure clean water is colourless, has no odour and does not taste of anything.
But to get the water in your environment to be so functional and usable is not a simple matter. Where there is water there is life, and it is our duty to protect this natural asset and to manage our water supplies well.
Water is soft if it contains low concentrations of calcium and magnesium ions. Hard water has a high concentration of calcium and magnesium. If you use soft water, the ions react with soap to produce a residue that feels as if it is hard to wash off. If you use hard water you have a harder time working the soap into a lather. Hard water occurs in some parts of the country, so sometimes water softening chemicals that reduce the amount of calcium and magnesium are added to the water.
